BACK STORY
The story behind the League of Kindness (LoK). Over the last 25 years Paddy O’Sullivan has been doing physical performance and working as a social worker. LoK is a way to bring together a number of Paddy’s performance themes and community work. He is interested in kinetic performance & play that is respectful of people, animals & the planet. Kindness is a characteristic that can promote caring and sharing our power. We all have some amount of power or agency in our lives. When a child learns to be gentle and kind with the family dog or their younger sister this can help shape how they develop further values. Play is vital to children’s development and to the happiness of families. Everyone can express their urge to play when they feel safe and are not overtaken by fear.
The Super Hero Challenge (SHC) came about after being active in promoting White Ribbon Day, an event that asks men to stand up against male violence towards women. Paddy wanted a fun and active way to challenge gender stereotypes, that often underpin sexist attitudes towards women. He was inspired by the choice of his niece who ordered a T-shirt for herself that said:
SHE NEEDED A HERO SO SHE BECAME ONE.
Super Heroes stories are often seen as glorifying violence and supporting traditional stereotypes. However there are a growing number of Super Hero events, movies & comic book characters that challenge gender stereotypes. The SHC seeks to use play & humour to demonstrate that action figures can be created and re-shaped into a means to promote equality and diversity. We can use play to be a power-with experience, that replaces the common macho power-over approach.
LoK is proud to partner with the Kyneton Agricultural Show 2016 to update their activities by replacing Tiny Tots & Miss Show Girl with the Super Hero Challenge. A stand will be at the show so you can buy a White Ribbon, take the oath and support the campaign to end violence against women.
